How does the ALICE Catalog’s advanced title search work?

The ALICE catalog is the best place to go when you are looking for books, films, journals, and other specific items. Searching by title in the ALICE catalog is quite easy! Below, we cover a couple different ways you can do this.

From the Ohio University Libraries' Homepage

First, you can search by title from our homepage, as pictured above.

  1. Select the ALICE Catalog as your search type from the first dropdown box. 
     
  2. Choose to search by Title in the next dropdown box.
     
  3. Type in your title, and press enter or click on the search button.

Using the ALICE Catalog's Advanced Search

You can also use the ALICE Catalog's Advanced Search to refine your title search. Simply follow the steps below, as pictured above.

  1. Select the ALICE Catalog as your search type from the first dropdown box on our homepage
     
  2. Click on the Advanced Search link that is located just after the search button.
    • This takes you to the ALICE Catalog Advanced Search feature.

      You will see many options to refine your search by material type, location, language, and more. Select Title as your search field from the dropdown menu, type in your title, specify any other details, and click the search button. 
       
    • You also may want to consider using a simpler interface, as pictured and described below:

  1. Select the Title tab on the Advanced Search page
    • Note that you can limit your search to only periodicals/journals or films/videos very easily from this interface. You can also do this in the main Advanced Search page by specifying your material type.
       
  2. Enter your title and click search.

Sample Title Searches

A book Use as much of the title as you know:
  • Gone with the wind

Entering a partial title, such as just Gone with, will find all items whose title begins with those words: Gone with honor, Gone with the Windsors, etc.

A periodical title
  • journal of canadian studies
  • newsweek
  • new york times
A monographic series
  • Advances in information security
  • loeb classical library
A movie
  • star trek
A conference Some, but not all, conferences can be located by title:
  • Conference on automation systems for business and industry

You can also use a Keyword search to find conference proceedings.
